Arnaud de Villeneuve was born in Spain in 1240. This scholar and doctor, fluent in a number of languages, was physician to the royal house of Barcelona from 1281 to 1310 and wrote many medical papers for which he was held in high esteem. He discovered the secret of distilling wine into alcohol and brought to light the beneficial effects “du mariage de la liqueur de raisin et son eau de vie” – the blending of grapes and spirits. This process, known today as “fortification” enables the conservation and the ageing of wine and from this the “Vin Doux Naturel” was born. Knowing the importance of Vin Doux Naturel in the history of wine making in the Roussillon, it is no surprise that the wine producers of the region chose to honour this man by naming the newly organized winery after him. The Arnaud de Villeneuve winery is situated amidst the vineyards in the Rivesaltes area along the main road the RD900. This is a historic site having previously been home to the Corbières and Bartissol wineries.
