The occasion was the New York Times spirits panel’s martini tasting. Eric Asimov, who is the chief wine critic for the Times, and Florence Fabricant, famed food critic for the Times, were joined by Audrey Saunders, bartender extraordinaire and an owner of the Pegu Club on West Houston Street, and Pete Wells, editor of the Times Dining section, who has written extensively about drinks. Needless to say this panel may know a thing or two about martini lunches. After the four of them shared 80 martinis, making it really a 20 martini lunch, Anchor Distilling’s Junipero Gin was rated as their #2 favorite Gin. They went on to say: “The Junipero, made in small quantities by the distilling branch of the Anchor brewery in San Francisco, came on strong with the traditional gin flavors of juniper and citrus, hitting all the right notes…”
